Frequently Asked Questions for Graduation:
How long is graduation?
Plan on the ceremony lasting approximately two hours. We will be graduating all of the Sixth Grade for Smiths Station (not just W.E. S.). The graduates will be escorted on and off of the football field. No one is allowed to leave until the ceremony is officially over.
What is the dress code?
We do not wear cap and gowns for graduation. We ask that the boys wear a collared shirt and tie, dress pants, and dress shoes. Girls may wear a dress appropriate for the occasion. Girls will need to wear dress shoes, but avoid “pointy” heels which will stick in the grass.
Behavior at Graduation:
We expect our students at W.E.S. to represent your family and our school well. Graduation is an important event in the life of a child and we will be respectful to all who are graduating. Any misconduct will result in dismissal from the field by the Officers on duty.
* We have all worked very hard for this night, and we will allow everyone to hear their name and have their moment.

E-I -E-I -O (Enrichment/ Intervention/ Operation)
No, We are not on Old MacDonald's Farm, but we are starting a new idea this week. We are incorporating and Enrichment/ Intervention block into our day. We are going to strictly focus on standards in Reading and Math that need work. MWF the 8-9 hour will be devoted to math , T-TH will be Reading.
The Enrichment activities will begin once your child has completed 80% mastery in all standards.
I am excited to stir things up a bit. We are using this plan to give the kids a taste of what next year will be like. The kids are with different groups of kids each day, and they rotate between teachers for that one hour. We had our first attempt today and I think it went really well. The kids were well behaved and tried very hard. Be Proud of your kid and tell them!

Dance Time!
The kids are so excited about our 6th grade dance this Friday night! It will be at the South Smiths (old Intermediate) from 5:30 CST to 7:30 CST. It is usually a load of fun! Pictures will be taken if you want them. Bring your money!
If you pay me- admission is $10.00/ if you pay at the door it is $12.00
* A few hints from someone who has been doing this a while.......
- Show up about 10-15 minutes late. The crowd at the door is crazy! Waiting can be long, and usually cold. Do the same for pick up , and know that it will take forever..... it just always does.
-Girls, if you have spaghetti strap dress, wear a cute little sweater or jacket. The reason is---No one will stop you at the door thinking your dress is outside the dress code. If you need a dress, let me know. We can find one you can borrow.
- Guys, no denim.
-Bring money for snacks
-This dance is for fun... ( you don't need a date). In the past we have only allowed two partner dances anyway. So tell your child to relax.... it is not prom. We are working on the Dougie to do as a class dance. We shall see if they can " Teach me how to Dougie!"
- I will be there from beginning to end and I expect my kids to behave as Ladies and Gentlemen. I will be there to remind them if they ever forget! :)

Yes, We are Trippin!
We are going on our first Field Trip on Tuesday. We will be going to see the production of Locomotion at the Opelika Performing Arts. We won't be gone long ( a couple of hours) but I think it will be a blast! Your kids are so incredibly wonderful that they make each day a blessing. I am excited about taking them to see something special.
We have an Intern! For the Spring Semester we have an intern from Auburn name Ms. Ivey. She is so sweet and so very excited to work with your child. She will mostly be observing, but we may let her try a lesson or two. Again, you have such wonderful kids that I would not deny her the chance to teach them.
It's Not Easy Being Green.....
We are in full force preparing for our Spring Assessments. I want an "All Green" class. That means that each child is working at a level where they will be prepared for 7th grade success! We are all close, but we all have a few things to tweek. Your child knows EXACTLY what they need to work on and if you want some resources for home, they are on this web site under Math. I will be working with any child in Math and Reading on any Standard that is below an 80. I will be pulling them aside to work one on one or in a very small group.
Go GREEN!!!

This Week
I am a little late in posting this week, but it has been a whirlwind!
This week we will be working on Author's Purpose in Reading. In Math we are discussing ratios, proportions and unit rate ( if you go to the store this week, let them see the unit rates on the price tag)
We have just finished Social Studies unit and we are working on Science.
Behavior and work ethic: As we prepare for 7th grade, I am going to begin to get tougher. I only want success for them and we have discussed what this looks like in the classroom. You may see a drop in grades and conduct points as we are enforcing the rules even more strictly.
Please check the calendar for our events....

A New Year..... New things
We have gotten settled into our new routine and it is really working well. In preparation for our Spring tests we have changed the format of our Reading and Math Small Group work. I sent home the first set of graded papers yesterday. We are spending this week looking at how to improve ( so they will still have the grades if you didn't see them).
We will be working on skills in Reading and Math to ensure the kids are well prepared. We have settled down from our Holiday break and we are all working very hard.
We are preparing your child for life in Jr. High School. You are going to find that we will be cracking down.
I explained that we are focusing on three things this semester.
1. Appropriate behavior
2, Prepared
3. Organization.
It is my hope that this will help with the transition from one teacher to 7!
